ok since i watched mcml i will post this song. Today's song of the day is Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto! his most famous song... i remember listening to this years ago. back when i was just a child. my mom would sometimes play this song in the car and i remember how sad it made me feel. it felt like i was longing for something. i would look outside the car window and look at all the buildings, the trees, the sky, the clouds, and feel a sense of warmth but also sadness. when i first heard this song in the car, i went home to replay it constantly on the computer for like a week. i remember this song specifically really stuck with me for some reason. 

and now it all came back full circle now. i had no idea who ryuichi sakamoto even was or that it came from a movie. and now i am a ymo and ryuichi sakamoto fan more than 10 years later. its actually amazing how his music has influenced me unknowingly from such a young age. 

also theres this version from the beginning of the movie that i also really like. i love the synth in here

watched merry christmas mr lawrence (1983)

watched merry christmas mr lawrence it was alright tbh. i was expecting a lot more but it was just okay. yes i did watch it just because ryuichi sakamoto is in it. 

mcml is about war and this british soldier named jack celliers (played by david bowie) gets captured by japanese soldiers and becomes a prisoner of war. captain yonoi (played by ryuichi sakamoto) is the captain of the japanese army and he is lowkey in love with jack celliers. theres also mr lawrence a british soldier who helps translate between the british prisoners and the japanese guards. and theres also sergeant hara who is a fav character tbh 

anyways i didnt like how the film was basically just like a bunch of short stories put together? i mean like it didnt have an actual overarching story it was just like they do this and then they go do that. also sometimes it was boring lowkey...

there were some really great scenes tho like the flower scene, the kiss scene, and the last conservation with mr lawrence and sergeant hara (that scene was so sad). those were my favorite parts of the movie. but other than that the movie really does not stand out.. kinda disappointed

i liked the themes of like toxic masculinity and war and connection. also this movie is not gay but its gay yknow. captain yonoi is obsessed with jack celliers for some reason thats not explained but yknow it shows how war and toxic masculinity kinda go hand in hand together. in war you cannot show love or emotions. you must always torture ur enemy. and captain yonoi knows this but everytime he has to punish or fight jack celliers he never does it because he doesnt want to! something inside captain yonoi is attracted to jack celliers and wants to connect with him but cant. because of war and how he was taught that you must always kill the enemy. so theres that conflict within him. its the same conflict with mr lawrence and sergeant hara. sergeant hara thinks of mr lawrence as an enemy, a weak prisoner but many times he lets him off easily or waves off his punishment because theres a connection between them. especially since mr lawrence puts effort into learning japanese and japanese ideologies. its interesting because mr lawrence is literally a prisoner who gets tortured everyday but still tries to find connection between him and the japanese soldiers. which is why that last scene between mr lawrence and sergeant hara is so heartbreaking. 

i loved all of that but the movie was just not enough for me. it had a few good scenes and character moments and also a banger soundtrack composed by ryuichi sakamoto butttt not enough unfortunately... 3/5 stars

mcml good okay-ish movie atleast it gave us ryuichi sakamoto and david bowie yaoi. also before i watched this ive seen so much yaoi fanart between captain yonoi and jack celliers i genuinely thought it was an explicitly gay movie. i mean theres subtext and that kiss scene but its really non-romantic. also ryuichi sakamoto was soooo um. handsome. in this movie 😁

also speaking of brian wilson's death im so glad i didnt get into ymo in like 2023 cuz hearing abt yukihiro takahashi and ryuichi sakamoto passing away in the same year less than 3 months apart wouldve been like 2 consecutive 9/11s for me i feel like i genuinely wouldve cried. i wouldve been flipping tables and punching holes in the walls

also this just reminded me that paul mccartney gonna die in my lifetime 💔💔like... i dont listen to the beatles that much anymore but i listened to them a lot when i was a kid and they definitely helped form some part of my personality. the beatles gave me a lot of joy in those times and made me listen to a lot more older music. pretty sure if i never got into the beatles ive never wouldve gotten into ymo or the talking heads. man paul mccartney old as shit. i cant believe hes gonna die someday..

Revisited their most iconic album pet sounds. I remember when I was 13 I didnt really think much of this album. but listening to it again i really understand why its so praised and iconic. Incredibly innovative stuff. I might even consider it one of my fav albums of all time.

im sorry for posting reddit but this is so interesting because i literally thought abt this too before. when you first listen to any ymo, their music sounds very asian no matter who listens to it. i was like this too like woahh so asian and i just thought they must be very proud of their culture. but yknow i listened to more ymo songs and its like... these lyrics are incredibly racist 💀💀but not in an actual racist way yknow more like satire.

i noticed it when i listened to la femme chinoise (french for chinese woman) i thought this song must be about certain european countries like france and their view of asia through a fetishistic lens. the song has stuff like "fu manchu" and "yellow sea"  and "the scent of the orient"

and i listened to more ymo songs and all of them are musically asian-sounding (firecracker, absolute ego dance) or atleast have some mention of asia (technopolis, nice age, the end of asia, seoul music). even their band name is literally "yellow" magic orchestra. and on live tours in america, i remember watching one and the announcer was announcing ymo and he was like the "yellow-est band in the world!" 💀💀
